Functional testing for strength and power: figure 8 hop test

Assessment of strength and power can be multidimensional. Strength, while having potentially multiple definitions, is probably best defined as "the maximal amount of force a muscle or muscle group can generate in a specified movement pattern at a specified velocity of movement" (Knuttgen & Kraemer 1987). Power is the rate of performing work, or force produced divided by the time it takes to produce that force.

Purpose: To assess the ability to produce power, speed, balance, and single lower extremity control on a horizontal surface in multiple directions (specifically the figure 8 pattern), with specific emphasis on speed over the distance covered by the single lower extremity. Comparisions can be made from side to side to assess LSI.

Equipment: Two standard stopwatches, colored or athletic tape.
