    In this set of recorded webinars, body composition expert Tim Lohman highlights the evolution of and breakthroughs in the field of body composition over the past 30 years. Emphasis is on the relationship of body composition to health, sport, and chronic disease as well as misconceptions and misuse of various body composition methods. Lohman also discusses the advantages and limitations of body fat measurement techniques and devices, including skinfolds, bioelectrical impedance, BMI, body fat measuring scales, underwater weighing, ultrasound, and DEXA scanning. With this knowledge, students will be able to select and use the best techniques and tools to give clients the most accurate body measurements.

    After viewing these webinars, students will be able to explain how body composition assessment can provide information to the practitioner and client and appropriately assess and report results. Errors in assessing body composition and new methods for assessment are also covered. Students should also be able to do the following:
    • Select the best body composition method appropriate for the purpose of the assessment.
    • Determine minimum weight estimates in the athletic population and outline benefits.
    • Identify the gold-standard fallacy in body composition assessment.
    • Explain why not all fat is of equal risk in relation to chronic disease.
    • Discuss why estimating lean body weight and bone density as well as body fat is critical to comprehensive assessment of body composition.
    • Explain why estimating minimum weight is an essential part of body composition assessment in sport.
    • Identify how specific methods used to measure body composition are related to the purpose and skill of the body composition measurer.
    • Discuss why measuring changes in body composition is more difficult than providing an initial assessment for the individual.
    After listening to the webinars, students will take a continuing education exam in order to receive credit through participating organizations.

    About the Author

    Tim Lohman, PhD, is professor emeritus in the department of physiology at the University of Arizona. He has conducted research in body composition in children and adults over the past 40 years. His primary research endeavors from 1970 to 1990 involved developing better approaches to body composition methodology and standardization. Since 1990 he has been involved in several large-scale collaborative studies including BEST (Bone Estrogen Strength Training Study), TAAG (Trial for Adolescent Activity in Girls) and Healthy Weight for Life. He has published more than 300 articles and book chapters. His current research focus is on long-term weight loss, and he is writing a book on the obesity epidemic and weight loss. He is co-editor of the Human Body Composition, Second Edition, and is a member of IOC Ad Hoc Body Composition Committee.
